Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder that affects approximately one in 15,000 people – about 500,000 individuals worldwide. Symptoms typically include difficulty suckling and eating, gastrointestinal issues, delayed crawling and babbling, balance and motor impairment, and seizures. It’s characterized by severe impairment in behavior, learning, verbal communication, motor skills, and sleep. There currently isn’t a cure or any sort of treatment. The individuals affected typically live a full lifespan. They are well known for their big smiles and overall happy demeanor that can really light up any room!
