National Crayon Day!
National Crayon Day is Reason to Celebrate for GoodGrandma℠! Records show that Europe was the birthplace of the “modern” crayon. The first crayons were made from a mixture of charcoal and oil. Later, powdered pigments of various hues replaced the charcoal. Crayola Crayons were invented by Binney & Smith in 1902, and first offered for sale in 1903. The first box of Crayola Crayons came in an 8 count box. It sold for a nickel and contained the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown and black.
A recent playdate I had the opportunity to do some coloring with two cute granddaughters. I printed pictures from Coloring 4 Kids of Disney‘s Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. I brought the two movies with me, just in case we had time to watch one of them.
I find it very satisfying to color with a new box of crayons! So, when some of the crayons “accidentally” broke, I was sad. However, this gave me a chance to show the girls what they can do with broken crayons. We started by taking the paper off the crayons and placing the broken crayon on some foil. Unfortunately, we didn’t have wax paper to make stained-glass windows, but we did melt the crayons into one giant flat crayon all swirled together! It was a great science experiment. We had a good time coloring, learning, and creating together. Gather your grandchildren, grab an adult coloring book, start coloring, and celebrate CRAYONS!!!
