Have you ever owned any vinyl records? Do you remember the name or the album or the single? My first vinyl record was a 45 RPM single by the Beatles, with “She Loves You” on one side and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” on the other. I was 10 years old, and I played left-handed air guitar (ala Paul McCartney) while singing it over and over again.

My first vinyl album I can remember was the Mamas and the Papas, featuring “Monday, Monday,” which I played until it wore out.

When I was about 21, I moved to an 8-track in my car, playing the Doobie Brothers 8-track tape over and over again (China Grove!). Then it was cassettes. And then it was CDs. Now, I subscribe to Apple Music, so that literally any song is just a click or two away.

But, we’ve come full circle, with retro lovers back to buying vinyl records. They enjoy vinyl’s analog imperfection that adds warmth and crackle.

My how times have changed! Grandparents, tell us, what was your first vinyl record?

  1. My first record was probably something dreadful like Adam Faith -yes,really. No now I remember, I loved Rogers and Hammerstein-the 50’s at the Odeon. I bought the records-Oklahoma, South Pacific The King and I. I soon went on to Bach Tchaichovsky er …Petula Clarke but then it was With the Beatles [wish I still had that and Abbey Road which I think is very good] Joan Baez , Judy Collins etc. and Dylan who I worshiped. In my 16 year old CND and folk club life I acquired a Topic album of anti war songs by Peggy Seeger Ewan McColl and others. I was a pretty serious adolescent. After that The incredible String Band, more Dylan, and more-Chopin Beethoven,Mozart and many many more. I love music. I’m still serious but not all the time.I have heaps of CDs and three shelves of vinyl including some really good classical, baroque jazz rock and The Mamas and Papas. One of the very best is a fantastic LP by Nina Simone ‘Nina at the Village Gate ‘. An incredible performance by a wonderful artist.
