While in New York City with my daughter, we were able to see two Broadway Shows. We knew we wanted to see Phantom of the Oprea, but we weren’t sure which other show to see. As we went to games, museums, and other general site-seeing activities, we asked the local New Yorkers which show they would recommend. (BTW, New Yorkers are kind, helpful, and very patient with their visitors. Every person we spoke with was helpful and courteous; not sure where they got a bad reputation because we thought they were wonderful!) As we asked, we continued to get the same response; “You need to see SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical.” I was a little skeptical because it was a cartoon I didn’t allow my own children to watch; I didn’t care for the negative name-calling and teasing that often took place on the show.

Well, we did it! We went to SpongeBob SquarePants the Broadway Musical, and guess what? We loved it! It wasn’t like the cartoons with my concerns of teasing, obnoxious sounds, and slightly inappropriate language. Instead, it was friendship-promoting, community-building, and positive thinking taught through the songs–and the songs were sung by truly talented performers! I found myself laughing right out loud, I even squealed and was totally giddy. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and didn’t want it to end. It was everything I would want in a Broadway Show! There was amazing dancing, talented voices singing great songs, costumes that were exciting, one-liners that brought smiles to faces of all ages. My all-time favorite dance number was I’m Not a Loser performed by Squidward, and by far the most amazing vocal performance was by Pearl Krab. I have to admit, this show was a highlight of our New York trip! I highly recommend it, for any grandparent, parent, grandkids, and children of all ages. It was fantastic.

During the intermission (or as some of my family members call it, half-time) we learned that the woman sitting behind us was the grandmother of the lead actor portraying SpongeBob! She was absolutely adorable! She had on a headset to assist with hearing the show and was grinning ear to ear. I found myself watching her from time to time. It was fun to see how excited and proud she was of her grandson. After the show, I asked if I could get a picture with her. I just had to meet this GoodGrandma as she supported her talented grandson.
