Waffle Iron Day!

Here’s an awesome Reason to Celebrate, it’s National WAFFLE IRON Day! I know what you are thinking, hold up, there is a day just for WAFFLE IRONS? What about regular irons? Where is their affirmation? I’m sure if there is a day we will find it! Anyway, I digress, back to WAFFLE IRONS!

Waffle lovers finally have their day of recognition on June 29, which is the day National Waffle Iron Day is observed. Some people enjoy their waffles plain with syrup, but we like ours topped with berries, whipped cream, and syrup. Who knew a simple machine would make such a big impact on our lives!

Get this, there are actually TWO waffle holidays! There is “WAFFLE IRON Day” on June 29th and “WAFFLE Day” on August 24th. It makes sense to have a Waffle Day on August 24th, the day Cornelius Swartwout received a patent for his invention of the stove-top waffle iron.

The earliest waffle irons originated in the Netherlands in the 14th century, and were made of two hinged iron plates connected to two long, wooden handles. The waffles would then be baked over a hearth fire. Although waffle irons have existed since the 1300’s, Swartwout added a shorter handle and clasp that would allow the waffle-maker to flip the iron without the danger of potential burns. His invention sat atop wood or gas stoves, and the cast-iron plates were connected by a hinge that swiveled in a cast-iron collar.
