Eat Your Vegetables

We have all been told to eat our vegetables, right?! What if eating vegetables were a pleasure, and we didn’t have to beg the kiddos to eat them? When my children were young, I would tell them a story of a giant who walked through the forest of broccoli trees. The giant, me, would speak in a deep voice about the beautiful green trees. Then I would comment that the weather was changing. I would dip the “tree” into the ranch dip, and magically, the broccoli became a snow-covered tree. Then the giant would eat the yummy tree! Believe me, it’s an entertaining story for toddlers. Of course, the child would then want to be the giant and eat the snow-covered trees.

Ranch dip reminds me of Jim Gaffigan. He has a segment about how no one had ever eaten a raw vegetable until the creation of ranch dip. Although I think he is funny, and perhaps there is some truth to his story, I enjoy eating vegetables, with or without ranch.

Jim Gaffigan ~ Fruits & Vegetables

For years, I have always had a fresh veggie tray prepped and ready in the fridge. Each week I buy vegetables, return home, and prepare a veggie tray. It was something all my kids, and now grandkids, know is available to snack on. A veggie platter is typically my assignment when we have family gatherings. I have made hundreds of them. Most veggie trays are standard and straightforward, but other times I jazz them up; in the shape of an eagle, in a football tray, in the shape of a butterfly, a three-dimensional turkey veggie tray, etc.

Preparing a veggie tray, really FAST!

GoodGrandmaβ„  book recommendation for eating vegetables is the book Tops & Bottoms by Janet Stevens. It was recommended to me by Laura. It’s adorable and educational. In the story, Hare tricks Bear into choosing the tops or the bottoms of the vegetables. Hare plants only vegetables that grow underground. Next time around it’s the reverse, Hare plants vegetables which grow above ground. It’s a story the grandkids will love.

Other books include, People Need Plants by Mary Dodson Wade, How Do Plants Help Us? by Bobbie Kalman, The Vegetables We Eat by Gail Gibbons, Eating the Alphabet, Fruits & Vegetables from A to Z by Lois Ehlert, and First Tomato by Rosemary Wells. Yes, I know, a tomato is a fruit, but I am going to include the story anyway. Take those cute grandkids to the library and check out the books on vegetables.
