National Taffy Day

Today is National Taffy Day! 🍬 Ever wonder how Salt Water Taffy got it’s name? Well, the most popular explanation came from candy-store owner, David Bradley, whose shop was flooded during a major storm in 1883. His entire stock of taffy was soaked with salty Atlantic Ocean water. Shortly after the flooding, a young gal came in his shop and asked if he had any taffy for sale. Mr. Bradley jokingly offered her some “saltwater taffy.” After sampling the taffy, she purchased some of the candy and proudly walked down to the beach to show her friends. Bradley’s mother overheard the conversation from the back of the store and loved the name “saltwater taffy.” And, it’s been called that ever since.

Did you know there is as many as 150 different flavors of taffy? No one really knows the total number of different flavors. If you can think up a flavor, it can be made into a taffy. Here is a list of top ten flavors:

  1. Peppermint
  2. Vanilla
  3. Banana
  4. Watermelon
  5. Frosted Cupcake
  6. Cotton Candy
  7. Raspberry
  8. Strawberry
  9. Licorice
  10. Caramel Swirl
