National Love Our Children Day

GoodGrandma℠ doesn’t need a National Holiday to love her children or her grandchildren. I am sure ALL grandmas feel the same way! However, a friendly reminder or suggestion of ways to show love is helpful, especially to your children. Colleen Kessler, an educational consultant, author, speaker, and founder of Raising Lifelong Learners, has a helpful list of ways to tell your kids you love them. We recommend checking out the list. Some ideas may or may not apply, depending on the ages of your children. We also encourage readers to look over Colleen’s blog. It has loads of educational information! Plus, us Colleen’s need to stick together. 😉

Here are a few of our suggestions of ways to express your love to adult children:

  • LISTEN ~ Rather than having all the answers or being distracted by grandchildren, try to truly listen when having a conversation.
  • ENCOURAGE ~ Be a the cheerleader you were when they were little. Share words of affirmation, and be sincere.
  • SHOW AFFECTION ~ When greeting or saying good-bye, be sure to give a hug or a kiss on the cheek. A gentle touch on the arm when offering words of encouragement can be reassuring. However, if you have children value their personal space, let them take lead.
  • ALLOW THEM TO BE AN ADULT ~ You did your part, you were their parent and you did the best you could to raise them. Now, trust them to make good choices and allow them to be an adult. You may not agree with everything they do, but they are their own individual and not your puppet on a string.
  • APOLOGIZE ~ When you have said or done something that has upset them, tell them you are sorry. It takes a big person to admit when they are wrong. Hopefully they know how to forgive!
  • TELL THEM ~ Say “I love you!” I use to have a hard time saying these three simple words. I didn’t want to over use them and have no feeling behind them. I was wrong, I don’t think you can over use them. It’s important to hear that you are loved. Tell them!

Papa Rich and I have 11 children between the two of us. All but one are adults; we love our caboose Lauren! The 10 adult children are wonderful, hard-working, kind, individuals. We love each of them very much! They are each unique in their abilities and talents. I can’t imagine our lives without each one of them. To our children, on National Love Our Children Day, we say, “We love you!”
