We took a poll on Instagram and learned that a lot of Grandmas have gardens. At GoodGrandma℠, we have a box that is primarily for the grandchildren to be able to eat what they find right there in the garden. Over the years we have done peas, carrots, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. This season we are growing just berries in the kid’s garden box. We have strawberries, raspberries, and a small blueberry plant. Raegan loves to eat the strawberries right out of the garden! One year in her own family garden, she ate so many of them her mom hardly had any left to make strawberry jam. In addition to the edible third box, we have also grown a variety of squash for the grandchildren to try. One of my favorites is spaghetti squash! The other two garden boxes are mainly for tomatoes and peppers to use in our family-famous salsa recipe.

Lauren is a big help when planting the garden. Last year I got her started and was taken away from the project for a little while. When I returned Lauren had planted the entire garden herself! This year, Jane and her kids got in on the action and helped with the garden, as well as mowing the lawn. “Many hands make light work,” is what my mom always says. I guess they are all hoping for some homemade salsa and strawberry jam in return. 😉
