GoodGrandmaâ„  would like to introduce Grandma Joy. Well, she’s a future grandma or grandma to be. Her first grandson will be arriving next month. Grandma Joy, also known as ThriftyMrsP, has an Instagram page of great savings and environmental-friendly IDEAS. 💵🌎 We felt is was only fitting to spotlight her on National Thrift Shop Day. She shares with us how her thriftiness all started.

When people ask me what my hobbies are, one of the first that I
mention is “thrift store shopping.” I also enjoy reading, going to the
movies, and hiking, but you would be surprised by the amount of time I
can spend in a thrift store!
My love of finding treasures among other peoples’ castaways
started when my daughter was a toddler (she’s now 17), and very much
into “dress-ups”. It was not uncommon to see her put on a hat, a
variety of plastic bead necklaces, and her fanciest dress to get ready for
the day. It didn’t matter if we were staying home, going to the zoo, or
going to a birthday party, she wanted to dress-up. So, one Christmas a
very good friend of ours gave her a hat box filled with second-hand
scarves. I thought that was a brilliant idea, and I asked her where she
found them. When she told me that she got them at a thrift store, I
thought, “Why didn’t I think of that?!” And, so began the hunt.
The number of things you can find at a thrift store is limit-less. I
am constantly making a mental note to myself of things I need to look
for the next I’m there: books and games for my classroom, a puzzle for
my mom, a white ceramic serving tray, a flower pot, work clothes…you
get the idea. Sure, I can run to Target a find any one of those things at a
decent price, but why would I when I can buy them for a fraction of the
price at a thrift store? Additionally, thrift stores save millions of pounds
of used goods from being sent to landfills. When I buy something at a
thrift store, I am contributing to a business that is good for our
environment. So, I encourage you, the next time you’re looking to buy
something, save some cash and be kind to Mother Nature by checking a
thrift store first. Happy hunting!
