IDEAS for New Step-Grandmas
To wrap up our Parenting Series, GoodGrandma℠ would like to share a few IDEAS for new Step-Grandmas Grandmas. When Papa Rich and I were married, I became a step-grandma to nine grandchildren, I was an “insta” grandma. Perhaps my insight being a step-grandma will help other step-grandmas.
DON’T FORCE A NAME ~ When I became a step-grandma, my new grandchildren ranged from ages one to 10. I was new to the scene, and I didn’t want to put pressure on anyone to call me “grandma.” I simply became, Colleen. The children had a wonderful grandma, Nana Jan, who they lost to ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. I knew “Nana” was her name and chose to simply be grandma when the time came. Now that we have a several years under our belt and a few more grandchildren (SEVEN), my name has changed to Grandma Colleen. However, most of the older grandkids still just call me Colleen, which is fine by me.
BE THEIR FRIEND ~ In addition to not forcing the children to call me a certain name, I also tried not to force a grandparent-grandchild role. For the older boys, I became a friend; another adult who loves them and cheers them on.
SPEND TIME TOGETHER ~ When you are asked to help, be available! In addition to being available, I recommend scheduling time to build a relationship. I have monthly playdates with my grandchildren who live nearby. I am lucky to have the opportunity to spend time with them, and we have fun together! The bond we have is wonderful, because of the time we spend together.
LOVE THEM AS YOUR OWN ~ A child can never have too many people who adore them! When I asked a dear friend, who is also a step-grandma, what advice she would give, she said, without hesitation, “Love them!” I agree whole-heartedly!
